Gillette is planning to make big changes to its South Boston headquarters, including creating residential housing and an outdoor space for the public.

The company filed a letter of intent with the city of Boston Wednesday detailing a major redevelopment plan to transform the 31-acre campus into a mixed-use community.

Some of the plans include creating a residential section of the property, including housing and a waterfront park. The rest of the property will be developed into commercial area for offices, labs and other spaces.

The shaving company's facility is in Boston's Fort Point area, housing its headquarters and manufacturing facility.

Here's what to know about the plan.

Gillette plans to develop Fort Point property into residential community, outdoor space

Gillette plans to redevelop its South Boston headquarters to include residential housing and a waterfront park, according to a letter of intent.

According to the letter, at least 30% of the 31-acre site would become housing under the new plan. Additionally, 50% of the site will be developed into a green open space. The rest of the property would be used for commercial space.

The redevelopment would make the area accessible to the public and "connect surrounding neighborhoods, open spaces, waterfront and public transportation," the letter said. The property sits on Boston's Fort Point Channel.

"We hope to develop a project that will address some of Boston’s most critical needs – from resiliency and open space to housing and economic opportunity – reflecting both citywide priorities and the interests of the South Boston community,” said Kara Buckley, Gillette's vice president of community affairs, in a statement.

Gillette to move manufacturing out of Boston as part of redevelopment plan

Gillette also said that the redevelopment of its South Boston headquarters includes plans to move manufacturing out of the property.

The company, which is owned by Procter & Gamble, initially announced last fall that it would be moving manufacturing to a 150-acre campus it owns in Andover. In a press release Wednesday, Gillette said it will build a new manufacturing center at the Andover property.

"The operational transformation at both sites will bring the single most significant investment P&G has ever made in Massachusetts – including its single largest investment in Boston," the release said.

When will Gillette begin redeveloping its South Boston headquarters?

Gillette filed a letter of intent to redevelop its South Boston headquarters Wednesday, which means the plan is only in early stages.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu expressed support of the project in a statement.

“My Administration will continue to work closely with Gillette and the community through planning, design, and regulatory processes to ensure the details of this major investment best serve the community and are consistent with our goal of inclusive, resilient growth,” Wu said.
