'This is the framework to be built on': Quincy's Ian Cain defeated in Republic primary

QUINCY - Attorney and former Marine John Deaton won the Massachusetts Republican primary, making him the GOP's candidate to face incumbent Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren in November. The Associated Press called the race for Deaton shortly before 9 p.m. on Tuesday night.

With 35% of votes counted, Deaton controlled 64.3% of the electorate, while his opponents Ian Cain and Robert Antonellis had secured a combined 35.7%.

Cain, Quincy's city council president, delivered a speech to a gathering of about 25 supporters at 16C, a pizzeria and bar in downtown Quincy, at around 8:50 p.m., just after conceding to Deaton over the phone.

Though Cain trailed both Deaton and Antonellis, he maintained a sense of optimism and possibility for the future.

"We set the foundation," Cain said. "This is the framework to be built on. We still have good ideas. And so we move forward from here. It's not this time, but there will be something in the future."

Deaton's released a statement thanking voters and turning attention to the general election against Warren, whom he attacked on a host of issues.

“Tomorrow, we begin the next phase of the campaign – an effort that will hold Elizabeth Warren accountable for her failures on the border, the unaffordable cost of supporting a family, a broken healthcare system, abandoning our ally Israel, and restoring faith in our politics," the statement says.

Shortly after Deaton's victory was announced, the Warren campaign issued a press release accepting two October debates against her GOP opponent, the first hosted by WBZ and the Boston Globe in Boston, the second hosted by GBH and New England Public Media in Springfield. The release did not include specific dates.

In the press release, Warren's campaign manager Janice Rottenberg attacked Deaton as an instrument of wealthy individuals and corporations.

"A small handful of crypto billionaires and corporate special interests poured more than $2 million into a super PAC to handpick their preferred Republican candidate, and now Massachusetts voters have a clear choice that could determine control of the Senate," the statement reads.
