After multiple three-day strikes last month, some hotel workers in Boston have walked off the job indefinitely until a new contract agreement is reached with their employers.

Local 26, the Massachusetts chapter of Unite Here , a nationwide labor union that represents hotel workers, announced the latest strike in a release Sunday. Last week, the union said the indefinite strike would begin if a new contract was not agreed upon by Oct. 4.

The workers are calling for higher wages, better staffing and the reversal of COVID-era cuts. Since their last contract expired on Aug. 31, workers at several Boston hotels walked off the job in three-day strikes throughout September .

    Here's what to know.

Which Boston hotels are affected by worker strikes?

Local 26 announced the start of an indefinite strike at two Boston hotels Sunday. The union said more than 600 workers are participating in the strike so far, and members at other hotels in the city could go on strike at any time.

The two hotels affected by the latest wave also saw its workers go on strike during Labor Day weekend.

    Here's which locations are affected:

    • Hilton Boston Logan Airport
    • Hilton Boston Park Plaza

How long will the Boston hotel worker strike last?

Local 26 said the latest strike would last until workers "reach a mutually satisfactory agreement with the hotel companies." The union also said picket lines would be staffed 24/7.

The previous strike at the two affected Hilton hotels lasted three days from Sept. 1 to Sept. 3.

Why are Boston hotel workers on strike?

Unite Here said workers are calling for higher wages, better staffing and workloads and the reversal of COVID-era cuts. The union said it has been bargaining for a new contract with hotel companies since April.

"Key demands remain unmet, and the raises proposed by the hotel companies do not reflect their record profits and are not enough to offset cost-of-living increases," Local 26 said in a statement.

Several employees said in the release that they work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

"I can’t make it with one. I work up to 70 hours a week," said Theresa Fiorino, a 29-year employee at Hilton Boston Logan Airport. "Going on strike is going to hurt me financially, but I am willing to make that sacrifice together with my co-workers.”

In a statement, a Hilton spokesperson said, "while we do not believe the union’s decision to strike is in the best interests of our Team Members, we respect their right to do so in a peaceful and lawful manner."

"While we disagree with many of the union’s current demands, we trust that we share the same goal which is to negotiate toward a fair and reasonable agreement that is beneficial to both our valued Team Members and our hotels. We will continue to work towards that goal," the spokesperson said.
