PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD)– Hundreds of people will visit Pawleys Island on Saturday for the annual Hammock Day Festival. The area is known for its rope hammocks, which earned it the nickname of the ‘Hammock Coast.’

Business owners throughout the village are preparing for the large crowds and family fun.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great day. Hammock shops are very family-friendly locations, and tomorrow will be no exception. The events will have activities and giveaways tomorrow, and it will be a great day,” said Carper Cole, part-owner of Pawleys Island Mercantile.

Hammock Day is a big deal on Pawleys Island. This year’s celebration is expected to be even bigger than in years past as the village shops and Georgetown County combine their celebrations.

“We decided to put together one big event for everyone to go and come to one place and enjoy being together, so it was just a kind of a marriage of the two different events into one this year,” said Beth Stedman, the President/CEO of Georgetown County chamber of commerce.

In addition to the food, music, and giveaways, organizers hope the festival brings the community together and highlights some things that make Pawleys Island unique.

“It’s a community coming together. We are the oldest Seaside resort in the country, and you can see that by talking to the locals and learning about the rich history behind everything. It’s just absolutely amazing,” said Alora Baver, the general manager of the Original Hammock Shop.

The festival will kick off at the original Hammock Shop, beginning at 10 a.m. and going until 5 p.m.
