PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The city of Pawtucket has received a $250,000 Open Space Grant from the R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM) to preserve a green space for years to come.

The city said the four acres of land lies along the Seekonk River in the undeveloped portion of the Victorian-era Riverside Cemetery. The land is south of Tidewater Landing and just North of Swan Point Cemetery in Providence.

“This land represents a tremendous opportunity for the city of Pawtucket,” Mayor Donald Grebien said. “Our residents deserve safe, free outdoor spaces for passive recreation, and this newly acquired land will fulfill that need.”

Open Space Grants require that the land remains largely undeveloped.

The city said it hopes to create a place that “fosters community engagement, relaxation and appreciation of nature.”
