Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison praised Gov. Tim Walz for getting their state through times of crisis with a “steady hand,” referencing both the COVID pandemic and protests following the police killing of George Floyd.

Watch Ellison’s remarks in the player above.

“It’s one of the reasons I think Tim Walz will be a great vice president,” Ellison told PBS News in an interview on Night 2 of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Before taking their current roles, Ellison and Walz were elected together to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006. He pointed to the governor’s legislative record as evidence that Walz is a pragmatic problem solver.

Ellison encouraged uncommitted delegates, who have voiced concerns about the Israel-Hamas war, to engage in more dialogue with elected Democratic leaders to push the change they want to see.

“They showed up at the Democratic National Convention to try to persuade people they believe are persuadable. So what that shows me is they have hope,” he said.
