Two new Monterey County wine labels are dedicated to supporting local charities.
There is one activity most wineries have in common, besides the obvious. There is also a feature shared by galas, altruistic activities and other gatherings. It can be seen in the bottle for bid at a silent auction, the wine pouring freely at a fundraising event, the gift presented to a nonprofit volunteer.

Most representative species are on the bite
We’re in the full swing of summer now, and most representative species are on the bite. From Big Sur up to Franklin Point, local anglers and visitors are pursuing rockfish, lingcod, halibut, sole and the occasional white sea bass. Much of this bounty can be credited to abundant bait in the bay. Squid spawns have started back up again in spots, mostly near Monterey. Big anchovy schools can be found in the deeper, more central areas of the bay. The year started out with a good showing of sardines, but we’ve received few reports of the speedy little baitfish recently.

In fact, The Special proved so successful at delivering on its name that watering holes across Philadelphia adopted it—to the point many locals call it “the city-wide special.”. But there’s only one Bob & Barbara’s Lounge who can claim real credit for introducing it, not that this stops...
The Transducers take performing purposefully, which translates into a good time for their fans.
On a warm February evening at the Salty Seal in Monterey, a group of friends have their arms around each other as they jump in unison to the Transducers’ cover of Lady Gaga’s “I Was Born This Way.” The Transducers have been filling dance floors around Monterey County since 2017, covering a variety of genres, such as rock (“Magic Man” by Heart), funk and motown (“I Want You Back” from the Jackson 5).
It may seem as if every winery does Pinot, but Corral Wine Co. shows there are differences.
There are many reasons why Pinot Noir has earned favored varietal status. Despite its weak will on the vine, despite the many – over 1,000 – clones, not all of which are bottle worthy, there is a finesse to the wine that can bring expression to terroir even a few dozen yards apart.
There’s no ‘alas’ about it. An adaptation of Hamlet results in a soliloquy.
Twice in recent weeks, Weekly writers have returned from a performance by New Canon Theatre gasping, the thrill of the experience evident in their prose. Dave Faries here, observing that the roaming theater company’s summer is clearly off to an electrifying start. It was evident when digital producer Sloan Campi was moved to praise Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. And it came through again in this week’s paper, as staff writer Agata Popęda reviewed The Tragedy of Hamlet.
Pet of the Week: Meet Juno!

Juno is currently in excellent hands and being cared for in a Salinas home with other foster kittens awaiting her spay surgery and her furrever home.
The New Canon Theatre is back with an excellent take on Shakespeare’s tragedy.
After kicking off the season with fantastic Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, New Canon Theatre Co. has not let fans catch a breath. Now playing is their exquisite take on The Tragedy of Hamlet. This longest play by Shakespeare can be acutely modern in its approach to...
