Storm Threats in the South-Central US.

On Monday, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center warned of strong thunderstorms in the south-central US. These include damaging winds, large hail, and potential tornadoes. AccuWeather says winds could reach up to 80 mph in areas like western Oklahoma, western Texas, and eastern New Mexico. Severe weather is also anticipated in Colorado, Wyoming, the Dakotas, and Nebraska by Monday night.

    Escalating Severe Weather

As the Monday storms subside, the severe weather threat will shift. On Tuesday, the Southwest is expected to experience extreme heat, while southern and central Florida will begin a days-long stretch of thunderstorms.

    Relief for Florida's Drought

The storms in Florida are forecasted to bring heavy rainfall, offering relief from the recent drought and record-setting temperatures. Beginning Tuesday, southern Florida could receive between 7 to 10 inches of rain through the weekend, with some areas potentially seeing even more. According to the weather service, Central Florida, including Orlando and Tampa Bay, could see 4 to 6 inches of rain over the next five days.

According to meteorologists, the specifics of the rainfall amounts and timing will become clearer in the coming days.

    Record Heat and Upcoming Relief

Since last month, central and southern Florida have experienced unprecedented temperatures. Sanford, Winter Haven, and Punta Gorda have seen temperatures near or above 100 degrees. Miami and Hollywood also recorded high temperatures in May, with Key West reaching a heat index of 115 degrees, matching its highest on record.

AccuWeather reports that the anticipated rainfall is expected to alleviate drought conditions in central and southern Florida, where some areas have only received 50 to 70% of their usual rainfall for this time of year.

As the nation prepares for a week of extreme weather, the upcoming storms and rainfalls could bring challenges and much-needed relief to the affected regions.
