For or against? Neighbors weigh in on Penfield Costco proposal

PENFIELD, N.Y. (WROC) — Costco is looking to develop in the Town of Penfield. As News 8 previously reported , the town has received a sketch plan review application from the developer for a 51-acre site, with the wholesaler listed as the primary tenant.

When the news first broke Monday, the comments sections on News 8’s social media pages began to flood with those both for and against the potential build. Our crew stopped by the neighborhood Tuesday to see just exactly how those in and around the area feel about the proposal.

“I love Costco. We love Costco, so we’re excited,” said Michelle Betler.

“There’s a Costco not too far from here anyway,” said Larry Mireles.

The proposed site at Rt. 250 and Sweets Corners Road in Penfield brings mixed reactions.

Betler lives not far from the area and is a Costco supporter. However, the potential build could fall along her route to work.

“As long as there’s not added traffic, we love the location. But, we’ll see how it plays out, I guess,” she said.

Traffic was the biggest concern from those we heard from Tuesday.

“It’s country here. I don’t like the idea of having more commercial,” said Paula Farber.

“The traffic is enough already with the YMCA and this intersection, and then the intersection at Atlantic Avenue and Rt. 250. The development even adds more. Slowly, the suburbs are beginning to look like Henrietta,” said Gail Farber.

News 8 reached out to the Town of Penfield, which is declining interviews at this time. A spokesperson for the town says officials are awaiting the initial review by the town’s Planning Board before commenting further.

Those interested in learning more about the plans are encouraged to find additional information posted to the Town of Penfield’s website July 24. A public hearing is scheduled at the Penfield Town Hall August 8.

The only existing Costco in the Greater Rochester area is located in Brighton’s CityGate development, where it serves as the anchor tenant.

Topgolf will be building in an adjoining parcel to CityGate and will be open in 2025.
