    District 2 sets championship plans

District 2 of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has finalized plans for its remaining winter sports championships, including setting the order and schedule of games for its basketball finals at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The postseason got started with the Dual Meet Wrestling Championships Jan. 31 and Feb. 3.

    BASKETBALL

The district needed to alter its basketball schedule for the ninth year of championships at the arena because it is playing on different days of the week this season. In the past, the schedule was set for Thursday through Saturday championship games with Sunday as a make-up date for weather problems. Unlike the first eight seasons, the Friday-Saturday weekend combination is not available this season because of other events at the arena.

Championships will be played in a quadrupleheader Sunday, Feb. 25, followed by either three or four games – depending on whether a district team is the highest seed in a District 2-11 Class A Subregional final – each on Feb. 26 and Feb. 29. If Feb. 25 or 26 has to be altered because of weather, Feb. 27 is available for those games. If Feb. 29 games have to be called off, March 3 will be used.

The Feb. 25 schedule begins with Class 2A girls at 1 p.m., followed by Class 4A boys at 3; Class 3A girls at 5 and Class 5A boys at 7.

Lackawanna Trail is currently on track to be the top seed in Class 2A girls, making it likely to wind up at the arena.

Defending champion Scranton Prep projects as a likely finalist in Class 4A boys where it is positioned to be the second seed.

The Abington Heights boys, another defending champion, have the district’s only perfect record, making the Comets likely to be in the Class 5A game.

The Feb. 26 schedule could start with a District 2-11 Class A boys game at 2 p.m. It will have Class 4A girls at 4, the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional girls final at 6 and the Class 2A boys game at 8.

Scranton Prep is again on target to play in the Class 4A girls game where it is the defending champion.

Lackawanna Trail is among the teams trying to get to the Class 2A boys game, but is last in the seeding race among six teams.

The Feb. 29 schedule is likely to start with a District 2-11 Class A Subregional girls final at 2 p.m. The rest of the schedule calls for Class 3A boys at 4 p.m., Class 5A girls at 6 p.m. and the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional final at 8 p.m.

The Abington Heights girls will be trying to maintain their status as the only team to appear in every year of arena finals. They are a Class 5A team.

    WRESTLING

The District 2 Tournament, where individuals try to qualify for the Northeast Regional as part of the path to try to reach the state tournament, is set for Feb. 23-24 at Wilkes-Barre Area.

Wrestling begins at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 23 and 10 a.m. the next day.

Abington Heights competes in Class 3A while Lackawanna Trail and Scranton Prep are in Class 2A.

Austin Smith will be going after his fourth district title while Abington Heights teammates Brian Heard, a junior, and Caleb Marzolino seek their third.

    SWIMMING

The diving portion of the District 2 Swimming Championships is scheduled for Feb. 24 at the Wyoming Valley Catholic Youth Center in Wilkes-Barre.

Ethan Horutz from Abington Heights is the defending Class 3A boys champion.

The swimming events will be held March 1-2 at Wilkes-Barre Area.

Class 2A, which includes Scranton Prep, will begin at 10 a.m. March 1 and 11 a.m. March 2.

Abington Heights is in Class 3A, which will start 3 p.m. the first day and 5:30 p.m. on the second.
