Harrisburg, Pa. — PSP has released a free safety item for distribution to people on the autism spectrum, which is designed to improve their interactions with law enforcement officers.

The item is an official card distributed by PSP that should be carried by people on the autism spectrum and presented during encounters with police.

“Behaviors associated with autism can cause barriers to effective communication. This card can be presented to reduce those barriers,” said Colonel Christopher Paris, Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police. “When an officer is made aware a person has autism, they can respond accordingly, resulting in a safer interaction for everyone involved.”

The card provides information to law enforcement officers clarifying that the cardholder may be nonverbal, bothered by loud noises, hyper-sensitive to touch, and/or unresponsive to commands or questions. Officers who are presented with the card are directed to be patient, use a calm and direct voice, and keep their questions and commands simple.

The card was developed by PSP's Office of Community Engagement. A .pdf version of the card is available on the Safety Resources page of PSP's website . It may be printed or saved on a mobile phone. Troopers will also have cards available at public community events.

PSP encourages individuals with autism to present the card during interactions with any police officer. The officer does not need to be a Pennsylvania state trooper.
