Fetterman Hits Back at Pelosi Over Biden Comments: ‘She’s Never Run for Any Office Outside of the House’

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) did not care for some curious comments from Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Wednesday’s Morning Joe on MSNBC.

The former speaker answered questions about President Joe Biden’s mental acuity amid growing concerns he will be unable to coherently make the case against former President Donald Trump on the campaign trail. Last month’s first presidential debate prompted widespread concerns about Biden’s abilities, and subsequent interviews did nothing to quell those fears.

“It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run,” Pelosi said . “We’re all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running short. I think overwhelming support of the caucus — it’s not for me to say, I’m not the head of the caucus anymore — but, he’s beloved, he is respected, and people want him to make that decision.”

But as one of the Morning Joe crew noted, Biden has vehemently insisted he is not stepping aside.

“I want him to do whatever he decides to do,” she replied. “And that’s the way it is. Whatever he decides, we go with. I think it’s really important and I would hope everyone would join in.”

Later in the day, Pelosi said that any claims she had suggested Biden drop his reelection bid were unfounded .

Appearing on Wednesday’s OutFront on CNN, Fetterman was asked about Pelosi’s remarks.

“What do you say to the former speaker?” Erin Burnett asked.

Fetterman replied:

As far as I know, she’s never run for any office outside of the House and she’s never run for the president and she certainly never won that as well. And, you know, he has already made his decision. Joe Biden has made that decision. He is staying in this race and he’s gonna take this through to the convention and to November and I’m going to back him on that. And if I have any advice for Joe Biden that is, you know, stay in if that’s what you believe. And I have his back 100%.

Shortly before Fetterman’s appearance, the Washington Post published an op-ed by Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) in which he became the first senator to call on Biden to drop his reelection effort. Earlier in the day, Sen. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) privately signaled he is open to a ticket without Biden on it.
