The FDA has issued an urgent product recall due to cross-contamination. The product that has been recalled is an ice cream sandwich, with the FDA giving it the highest risk level.

This comes as concerns were raised over cross-contamination with peanuts. The Leona's Ice Cream, Strawberry Pretzel Salad are 6 oz individually wrapped sandwiches.

They were distributed to stores in the state of Pennsylvania . The sweet treats in question pose a serious threat to people who have peanut allergies.

The voluntary recall was initiated by the producer of the ice cream sandwiches on July 1. 136 ice cream sandwiches have since been recalled.

Meanwhile, the FDA issued an alert to inform the public about the recall. "The product has cross-contamination with peanuts," it reads.

The recall was given Class I classification. This category is the most serious of recalls that the FDA issues.

Class I is defined as "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death" by the FDA.

This recall was a firm-initiated recall. This happens when a firm chooses to "remove or correct a distributed product for any reason and under any circumstance."
