Major Recall: Ice Cream Sandwiches Upgraded To Highest Risk Category By FDA

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy an ice cream treat. Although Leona’s Ice Cream is a great option, a recent recall has folks checking their freezers to ensure they’re safe. On July 10, the Food and Drug Administration issued an alert for a Class I product recall on their 6 oz. ice cream sandwich. More specifically, those in the flavor Strawberry Pretzel Salad. These products were distributed in stories across Pennsylvania.

Although the reason for the recall won’t affect everyone, it’s highly important that those with peanut allergies pay attention. According to the recall announcement, this recall was made because these ice cream sandwiches have “cross-contamination with peanuts.” Thankfully, the company’s response to this mistake is said to have been swift.

“The contamination was brought to our attention at 6 a.m. on July 1. By 8:30 a.m. all affected products were removed from stores and customers were notified during that same day,” a representative of Leona’s says. “More than 50 percent of recalled product was clawed back and destroyed. The entire recall was instituted and completed in 2 hours.”

But what does a Class I recall mean? According to the FDA, this level indicates that “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

If you or someone you love has an allergy, this may not surprise you. Even the smallest amount of cross-contact can lead to an allergic reaction. The reactions to this exposure vary by person and allergen, but in the worst cases, they can lead to death.

The products recalled include the following number: F-1473-2024. If someone with this allergen discovers the recalled product in their freezer, they’re advised to throw it out or return it to there place of purchase. Stay safe, everyone!
