FDA Issues urgent recall of ice cream sandwiches over fear they pose significant danger

The FDA has urgently recalled a product due to cross-contamination fears. The item in question is an ice cream sandwich , which the FDA has classified as high risk.
This action follows concerns about potential peanut cross-contamination. The product, Leona's Ice Cream, Strawberry Pretzel Salad, comes in 6 oz individually wrapped sandwiches.
These sweet treats were distributed across Pennsylvania and pose a significant danger to individuals with peanut allergies. The producer of the ice cream sandwiches initiated the voluntary recall on July 1, and since then, 136 ice cream sandwiches have been recalled, reports the Irish Star .
In response, the FDA issued a public alert about the recall, stating: "The product has cross-contamination with peanuts." The recall received a Class I classification, the most severe category of recalls issued by the FDA.
The FDA defines Class I as "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death".
This recall was firm-initiated, meaning the company chose to "remove or correct a distributed product for any reason and under any circumstance."
It comes as another ice cream company voluntarily recalled one of it's products over the potential contamination by "foreign objects". Casper’s Ice Cream Inc., based in Utah, has recalled more than 13,000 tubs of ice cream that were discovered to contain rubber fragments.
The company first issued the recall in June, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now updated it to a Class II risk . The recalled ice cream was the Red Button Vintage Creamery Cookie Dough Ice Cream, with the lot number of 092-24-568 and UPC of 0 77865 01008 6.
It was distributed in eight U.S. states: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Hard foreign objects in food can cause injury like lacerations in the mouth, tongue, throat, stomach and intestines, a well as damage to teeth and gums, the FDA reports.
Objects less than 7mm, however, "rarely cause trauma or serious injury except in special risk groups such as infants, surgery patients, and the elderly." Those who have purchased the recalled ice cream are encouraged to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. You can contact Red Button Vintage Creamery by contacting them on their website .
