One of Donald Trump’s top contenders for his vice presidential nominee slot, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), blamed Joe Biden’s “rhetoric” for the shooting at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday.

The presumptive GOP nominee spoke to supporters when gunshots rang out throughout the event. Trump gripped his ear and fell to the ground before being surrounded by Secret Service officials. In a post to Truth Social, the former president said his wound was the result of a bullet.

Vance reacted to the news by blaming Biden for the attempted assassination, citing the “rhetoric” the president has used on the campaign trail against Trump.

“Today is not just some isolated incident,” Vance wrote to his followers. “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.

He added, “That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.

Vance, considered a top contender on Trump’s vice presidential nominee shortlist, drew condemnation for blaming the president for the shooting. Donald Trump Jr., an advocate for Vance in Trump’s inner circle, is expected to speak at the RNC before the running mate is announced.

Following the incident, Secret Service announced that Trump was safe and the shooter dead. A spokesperson for Trump later confirmed that the GOP leader was being treated a local medical facility.

Biden issued a statement and held a press conference noting that he and his family were “praying” for the former president.

“I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania,” Biden said. “I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
