German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemns 'despicable' attack on Trump

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has wished Donald Trump a speedy recovery after the former US president was shot in the ear during an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

"Such acts of violence threaten democracy," Scholz wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday.

He added: "The attack on US presidential candidate Donald Trump is despicable. I wish him a speedy recovery. My thoughts are also with all of those who were affected by the attack."

German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann also condemned the act. "Violence is never a legitimate means of resolving a political conflict. And it is completely irrelevant whether you like a candidate's political program or not," the minister wrote on X.

"Fortunately, Donald Trump survived the assassination attempt," he added.
