Trump Reveals He’s Rewriting Nomination Speech Following Assassination Attempt: ‘A Chance to Bring the Country Together’

Former President Donald Trump has overhauled his upcoming Republican National Convention speech to appeal for national unity after surviving an assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The ex-president, who was struck in the ear by a bullet on Saturday, now sees this moment as an opportunity to draw the nation together.

In an exclusive interview with the Washington Examiner on Sunday , Trump said: “The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger. Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

Initially set to critique rival President Joe Biden , Trump’s revised speech aims to address the nation’s collective resilience and call for unity across political divides.

Trump credited a momentary turn towards a data screen with saving his life.

He said: “I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?”

On Sunday morning Trump posted to Truth Social that “God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”

The same day, Pennsylvania State Police identified three victims of the attack. One attendee of the rally, former fire chief Corey Comperatore, was killed, reportedly shielding his family after hearing the gunshots, and two other men were injured.

Trump’s decision to address the convention with a message of unity is seen as a pivotal response to the attack.

Speaking to the Examiner , he said: “This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together.”
