Maher Tells Buttigieg It ‘Looks Bad’ Biden Hasn’t Fired Anyone Over Trump Shooting: ‘We’ll Look Into It If We Have Time’?

Bill Maher pressed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg about the security failings that led to last week’s assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on his Friday night show.

According to the FBI, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to get a clear line of sight on the former president but no one from the Secret Service had explained how as of a week after the shooting that left a man dead and Trump and two others wounded.

There have also been calls for President Joe Biden to fire Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle , who has not spoken publicly on her agency’s failings from last week and has not stepped down.

On his weekly HBO show Real Time on Friday, Maher welcomed Buttigieg to discuss a number of topics including the targeting of Trump. Maher asked the Biden administration cabinet official why Cheatle was still employed.

“Should Joe Biden have fired the Secret Service head?” he asked. “I mean, I don’t understand that.”

Buttigieg condemned the shooting but said he had not been privy to any information about what the internal response to it would be.

“I’m not in on all the details of the Homeland Security side,” he said. “I know there’s a really serious after-action report and process and a whole lot of scrutiny going on there.”

“I think, you know, everything that led up to that moment, that horrible moment is under a microscope,” he added. “And I believe that President Biden and the administration will do the right thing.”

Maher pushed back and pointed out that it doesn’t look great, given the context.

“Well, you didn’t need a microscope to see it,” the host said. “The guy was on the roof, you know, like like not that far away.”

“I’ve seen people fired for less, and it just looks bad,” he aid. “It looks like, ‘Well, the other guy from the other party got shot. Well, we’ll look into it if we have time.'”

Buttigieg doubled down on his opinion the proper decision would be made about what – if anything – must be done to ensure Secret Service agents are up to task:

I think it’s that when something of this gravity happens, so you don’t just dash off a decision, you do a comprehensive process to find every single piece of anything that could go wrong. And then there’s going to be accountability and there’s going to be change. I’m sure of that. Again, I’m not in the middle of that. Obviously that’s not my lane, but I know that’s what’s going to happen.
