CNN’s John King suggested that “there could be some risk” in Vice President Kamala Harris tapping Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as her running mate because of his Jewish background on CNN Sunday night.

“So Pennsylvania’s Governor Josh Shapiro is being discussed as one of Harris’s potential running mates. He also endorsed her tonight. In your view, what are the pros and cons for putting him on the ticket?” Anderson Cooper asked King.

“Well, he certainly under consideration, I know that from key Harris allies. He’s a first-term governor, he’s Jewish, there could be some risk in putting him on the ticket,” began King. “But certainly some of our voters here in Pennsylvania said, ‘Hey, we like Governor Shapiro, give him a look. Also told, though, Anderson, that some other governors, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, are on the list of the Harris team.”

“One Harris ally told me today they hope to get her within a few days, assuming her path to the nomination continues to look good, and it does tonight, but we still have some question marks, they hope to get her a list,” continued King. “They say within several days, through a week of 4 or 5 names for her to pick from.”

Though he did not explicitly say so, King’s concern likely relates to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas and the anti-Semitism present at many pro-Palestine and anti-Israel protests across the country in recent months.

Online, many reacted with some combination of shock and disgust.

“CNN’s John King reports that Democrats are concerned that Pennsylvania Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro’s Jewish faith is a risk if he is on Kamala Harris’ ticket,” noted Republican operative Steve Guest. “The antisemitism in the Democrat Party is WILD.”

“In America today, antisemitism on the left is a given,” submitted The Boston Globe‘s Jeff Jacoby.

“I know exactly where Jews stand when it comes to Democrats,” said conservative writer Karol Markowicz, “and still it’s insane to hear this so casually said out loud.”

On Monday, it was reported that Harris would not preside over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech before a joint session of Congress later this week.
