Pensacola looking at current twice-a-week garbage pickup as it brings back recycling

Pensacola may consider changes to its twice-a-week garbage pickup as part of offering curbside recycling.

Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said the city will be surveying its sanitation customers soon to determine their opinion of the city's twice-a-week garbage pickup service.

The city began offering the twice-a-week service when it ended curbside recycling last year.

"We did twice-a-week garbage for a year, do we see any value in that?" Reeves said. "Maybe a family of five or six sees a lot of value in it. And maybe a college kid or a senior citizen who lives by themselves doesn't see a lot of value in that. We want to know that. Because when we roll back out with recycling 2.0, we also want to look at how we would handle everything."

In May, the city selected Adams Sanitation to provide curbside recycling service . They are negotiating a contract outlining how the new service will work.

Reeves said that while Adams Sanitation's initial proposal included a weekly pick-up price for recycling, the city is considering all options.

"I wouldn't assume that it's definitely going to be weekly coming back," Reeves said. "It could be every other week, as an example. Those are the conversations we're going to have with Adams."

Reeves said no decisions have been made about how garbage pick-up will change when recycling comes back, and the city wants feedback from customers in addition to evaluating what's operationally possible.

"In a perfect world, I think it would be great if we could offer once a week in recycling, once a week without, and twice a week with recycling and twice a week without," Reeves said. "To have those four options, I think, would be ideal, but logistically, operationally, we've got to make sure that that works."
