Pensacola’s Pineapple Express Hawaiian Grill is closing its doors permanently on July 26, according to a social media post from the company Wednesday morning.

The Hawaiian-style restaurant located at 1400 Barrancas Ave. made its debut in February.

“Thank you everyone who came and supported the business up to this time! We’ll update you more regarding the future of the business next month,” the Pineapple Express owners wrote in a statement.

Pineapple Express started out as a food truck specializing in Hawaiian rice bowls. When owner Michael Perez transitioned his concept into a brick-and-mortar earlier this year, it expanded the menu to offer more grill items, such as burgers and specialty grilled meat plates.

At the larger location, you could find traditional Hawaiian dishes, such as Loco Moco, Spam and eggs, kalua pork and chicken katsu.

The restaurant, located at the former Xiscali Mexican Taqueria, was a partnership between Perez and his wife, Erin, and the owners of Xiscali, Gerardo Zentle and Reina Medina.

The owners took to social media on June 13 to express that the lack of sales compared to when they first opened earlier in the year.

“Opening this restaurant was not a simple decision for us. We appreciate all the support and love. Unfortunately, we’re not seeing the same activity as when we first opened. We are hoping for the best, but at the same time we are seeing our options,” the statement said. “If you don’t have any lunch or dinner plans. Please come by and grab (a) meal. We appreciate your patronage. We’re only here because of you.”
