Person found dead in Illinois River identified as 14-year-old Bloomington boy
A 14-year-old boy from Bloomington was identified Monday by the Peoria County coroner as the person who was found dead Saturday morning in the Illinois River near Bartonville. Coroner Jamie Harwood said in a Facebook post that Leron Griffin died due to drowning in the Illinois River and likely hadn't been in the water more than two days. Griffin was found by a fisherman around 9:30 a.m. Saturday on the Peoria County side of the river near the Shade-Lohmann Bridge.

A fisherman saw the body southwest of the Shade-Lohmann Bridge near the Peoria Lock and Dam.

Peoria County, IL – A body was found in the Illinois River on Saturday, July 6th, 2024, prompting a multi-agency investigation. The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at approximately 9:32 a.m. after a fisherman discovered the body behind Liberty Steel at 7000 S. Adam St., Bartonville. The body was located approximately 300 yards southwest of the Shade-Lohmann Bridge near the Peoria Lock and Dam, caught on the dam.
