    Liquor license fight and past restaurants: The latest Peoria food news

    Good morning, foodie friends,

    We have plenty of Peoria-area food news to digest this week. We’ll dig into why the Peoria City Council rejected a debated liquor license. I’ll share the scoop on a smoothie shop which is coming soon, and we’ll look back at old Peoria favorites which have closed.

    Peoria City Council rejects business’s liquor license after debate

    The Peoria City Council voted 5-3 on Tuesday to reject a liquor license application for Empire Lounge. Emotions during the discussion ran high at times, with an employee of the business leaving and slamming the door as councilmember Denise Jackson explained her opposition.

    The opposition centered around a lack of trust and transparency with the community and city. While Mayor Rita Ali voted in favor of the license, she said there had been “big mistakes” made by the establishment. She said if a license were to be granted, she “wouldn’t hesitate” to revoke it if additional infractions occurred.

    New cocktail bar offers a place ‘to escape after the daily drudgery’

    Earlier this month, Revel & Maker opened above Ardor Breads and Provisions in Downtown Peoria. The cocktail bar will operate from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

    An Instagram post described Revel & Maker as “a space to escape after the daily drudgery & to celebrate those memorable milestones.”

    New smoothie shop coming to East Peoria

    Tropical Smoothie Cafe is working to open at 200 W. Washington St. in East Peoria, according to Ty Livingston, East Peoria’s planning and community development director. He expects the business to open later this year.

    The café’s online menu features a variety of smoothies, bowls, foods and more.
