Road work begins at major Peoria intersection. Here's what you need to know

A $9.1 million reconstruction project has begun on Pioneer Parkway in Peoria.

The road work near the University Street intersection is anticipated to finish between the fall and winter of 2025, according to Nicholas McMillion, the Peoria Public Works communication director.

Right now, traffic on that stretch of Pioneer Parkway is limited to one lane in both directions. McMillion said it will likely stay that way through December of this year.

Workers are removing pavement, curbs and gutters on Pioneer Parkway. Once the pavement and gutters are removed, grating work for the road's base layers will begin, followed by new pavement, curbs and gutters.

One of the more pivotal aspects of the project, McMillion said, will be the addition of a mixed-use path on the southside of Pioneer Parkway and a sidewalk on the northside of the road.

"When it is complete, it will be a very nice stretch of roadway with a lot more pedestrian accommodations than what people are used to now, so we're looking forward to that with the Pioneer Parkway project," McMillion said. "That intersection is such a critical intersection of the city anyways, but it's going to be a nicer intersection once it's done."

The scope of this project extends on Pioneer Parkway to around Harker Drive to the west and to Sommer Street to the east. It then runs north on University Street to Altofer Drive and south to right about where the McDonald's is located, McMillion said.

This Pioneer Parkway project is one of the improvements the city has planned for the road, but is awaiting funding.
