    Good morning, foodie friends,

Before we dig into recent food news, I want to dish out an update from a story last week. Revel & Maker – located above Ardor Breads and Provisions – is now open from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Now, this past week has served up some big food and dining stories for us to sink our teeth into. From liverwurst with listeria to the cost of credit cards, there’s a lot to digest.

    So, let’s dig right in.

On July 30 , the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, announced Boar's Head Provisions Co., Inc. was expanding a recall from late last week. The FSIS announced the initial recall last Friday after an unopened Boar’s Head liverwurst tested positive for listeria.

The FSIS, along with others, is investigating a multistate listeria outbreak which has included over 30 hospitalizations and two deaths. In its latest announcement, the FSIS wrote:

“Whole genome sequencing results show that a liverwurst sample collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes.”

Restaurants incur interchange or swipe fees each time a customer pays with card. Such fees are now “the third largest operating expense” for many establishments, according to Sam Toia of the Illinois Restaurant Association.

As all costs rise, more restaurants in the Peoria area are passing these fees directly onto customers in the form of surcharges.

“We have fought back and forth in our minds and in our hearts on what to do, and we can no longer absorb all those costs,” said MaryBeth Milburn, owner of MD’s Sports Bar & Grill in Peoria .
