Area Student to Participate in Governor’s Charity Steer Show in August
The 42nd Governor’s Charity Steer Show will be held August 10th during the 2024 Iowa State Fair. The event, hosted by the Office of the Governor of Iowa, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Beef Industry Council, helps raise money for the three independent Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City.
Braves runner-up at Zwingle Tournament
On Saturday July 13, the Bellevue Braves faced Epworth in the Zwingle Baseball Tournament and came away with a 3-2 victory. The Braves took the early lead when in the first Andrew Swartz singled, and Ethan Hefel proceeded to drive him in with a triple. In the third Hefel was hit by a pitch, then scored on a Chet Knake double. The next batter up was Cole Swartz who drove in Knake with a single. That was all Braves' right-hander Jordan Nelson would need as he scattered four hits while fanning seven. Mitch Roeder took the loss for Epworth.
Reckless driver crashes into Mississippi River
On July 16, 2024, at approximately 7:30 pm, a Grant County Deputy was on patrol on Eagle Point Rd when he was flagged down by a male on the side of the road. The male informed the deputy that he was near his vehicle with his dog when he observed a vehicle traveling west into O’Leary’s Lake at a very high rate of speed. The male was afraid the vehicle was going to crash into him or his dog. The driver then lost control, rolled the vehicle, and it entered the river.
3 injured in single-vehicle crash in Jo Daviess County
JO DAVIESS CO., Ill. (KWQC) - Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office said three people were injured after a driver swerved to avoid a construction truck. The driver has been cited for speeding, reckless driving, defective brakes, failure to wear a seatbelt, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving an uninsured vehicle.

Vikes’ playoff foiled by Independence
An early deficit proved to be too much for the Decorah baseball team Friday as the Vikes hosted Independence (14-20) in the Class 3A Substate 3 quarterfinals. Crews continue working to clear trees in Davenport after tornado
City crews in Davenport and Bettendorf have been working non-stop to clear fallen trees, power lines, and debris after Monday night’s tornado. Scott County Emergency Management Deputy Director Jim Hawkes says the EF-1 tornado, which was on the ground for eight miles, left a tangle in its wake. “There’s a lot of tree damage, a lot of powerline damage. The cities are dealing a lot with trees that are tangled up in powerlines and they’ve been unable to clean them up,” he says. As of this morning, power has been restored to most of the area.
