Historic front page from the Des Moines Register, Jan. 12, 1943: Five brothers die in WWII
Iowa's five Sullivan brothers received wide publicity when they joined the Navy during World War II and served together on the light cruiser USS Juneau. Hit by torpedoes, the ship sinks on Nov. 13, 1942, during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Three of the brothers are killed instantly, another drowns and the fifth dies several days later while awaiting rescue. It isn't until Jan. 12, 1943 ― the day of this report in the Register's sister evening paper, the Des Moines Tribune ― that the military informs the brothers' parents in Waterloo that all five are missing in action and presumed dead. From then on, the Navy would enforce a policy against brothers serving on the same ship.

Master Gardener Applications Open Through ISU Extensions
The Master Gardener training program is open for applications across the state of Iowa. This program will teach interested individuals about horticulture, as they learn through online and in person workshops. Classes for the program will take place from September 3rd to November 8th, with an on campus class in Ames on October 26th. To officially become a Master Gardener, individuals will need to finish the course after applying and being selected to participate, then volunteer for 40 hours in their training county by the end of the next calendar year, and stay involved after completing the internship by taking 10 hours of classes to continue their education and volunteering 20 hours annually.
ICPD identifies suspects accused of assaulting homeless man downtown
Iowa City Police say they’ve identified the suspects accused of assaulting a homeless man downtown earlier this week. On Tuesday, the ICPD released a video of a suspect assaulting a homeless man who was sleeping near the bicycle racks outside the Iowa City Public Library just after 1:00 Tuesday morning. The video shows another suspect assaulting the same person less than ten minutes later. The suspects returned to the area a third time and were seen on video sprinting through the alley next to the Iowa City Senior Center at 1:20 am.
