The director of the Iowa Department for the Blind is resigning as she battles kidney cancer, she said Tuesday. Emily Wharton has served as the department's director since 2016. BELLE PLAINE, Iowa (KCRG) - Inside Drahos Shoe Store, on Main Street in Belle Plaine, lives generations of knowledge. “My grandfather was a Shoemaker in Bohemia. In 1904, he immigrated to the US. He was 17 years old. He had $22.60 in his pocket,” says Dan Drahos, the current owner and operator of Drahos Shoe Store. Don’s grandfather used those talents to start up a shoe repair business in Belle Plaine during the Great Depression, and eventually passed the business along to his son.
