More than 30 Perquimans County High School students plan to attend the Fellowship of Christian Athletes summer camp this year, the largest group of PCHS students ever to travel to the annual camp in western North Carolina.

Funding from the Collin “Snap” Winslow Mini-Grant Program will help them make the trip.

According to a press release from the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, interest in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes continues to grow at Perquimans High School. Last year, 24 students attended the summer FCA camp held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain. This year, approximately 34 students plan to attend the camp, according to Lynette Baker, one of the adult supervisors who will also be making the trip.

According to Baker, students are excited to attend the FCA Leadership Camp where they work on leadership skills and learn how to lead and organize events such as Fields of Faith.

“Fields of Faith is a local event where students challenge their peers to read the Bible and follow Jesus Christ,” the press release states. “It is a time to spark a spiritual movement for God. These students are equipped to stand together against the pressures and temptations in our world and be a generation that is committed to reading the Bible and applying it to their lives.”

When Ken and Holly Winslow, Collin Winslow’s parents, learned that an additional vehicle would be needed to transport students to the FCA camp this summer, they allocated $2,500 from the Collin “Snap” Winslow Mini-Grant Program to help pay for the trip.

“One of the goals of the Mini-Grant Program is to support programs like FCA where students can attend and build their faith in Jesus,” the Winslows said. “There’s nothing better to support than providing funding so students can attend FCA camp. It can be life-changing for them.”

The Collin “Snap” Winslow Mini-Grant Fund was established following Collin “Snap” Winslow’s death in a May 2023 hunting accident. Funding from the mini-grant fund is used to help fund programs like FCA, hunter safety and baseball.

The Collin “Snap” Winslow Scholarship Fund is now valued at $51,000 and the Mini-Grant Fund is valued at $80,000. Both endowments were established by Winslow’s family and friends and the Perquimans community following his death. Both endowments are managed by the Perquimans County Schools Foundation.
