A recent Perquimans County High School graduate who plans to become a teacher was this year’s recipient of two scholarships named for former superintendents of the Perquimans County Schools.

Vivien Lane, who is heading to East Carolina University in Greenville to pursue a degree in education, was the recipient earlier this year of both the 2024 Dwayne K. Stallings Education Scholarship and the 2024 James Pat Harrell Education Scholarship. Each scholarships is valued at $1,000.

Stallings was an educator for more than 30 years, 21 of them as an administrator in Perquimans County Schools. Before being named superintendent, he worked as an assistant superintendent, as both a principal and assistant principal at PCHS, and as principal at Perquimans Central School. Following his retirement from the school district, he worked as an adjunct professor at ECU.

Harrell also was a longtime educator and “friend of public education,” the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, Inc. said in a release. He worked as a principal at Hertford Grammar School and assistant superintendent before being named superintendent, a post he held until the late 1980s. He then relocated to Dare County where he worked as superintendent of schools until his retirement in 1993.

Harrell later became one of the charter members of the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, Inc., and served as its president for many years, the PCSF said.

Lane said in an essay written to qualify for the Stallings and Harrell scholarships that teachers have had a large impact on her life. Following her graduation from ECU, she hopes to “make a difference in the lives of children” as a classroom teacher, she said.

“I would not be where I am in life if it were not for some of my teachers,” Lane said. “They motivate me to work hard, join extracurricular activities and often lend a compassionate, listening ear to issues I face on a daily basis. I believe being a teacher is one of the most influential jobs in the world.”
