Photo/Brian Smith Starters tend to get all the publicity but having a solid group of reserves is critical to any team’s success. Perrin proved just that Friday, Feb. 9 in a 75-13 win over visiting Throckmorton in the Pirates’ home finale. Freshman Riley Sims, brought up from the JV, led the hosts in scoring with 12 points as one of four Pirates in double figures. Perrin coach Todd McCormick said he has told his players all year to be ready to go at anytime. “They played hard tonight,” McCormick said of his backups. “They’re in there to play for a reason.” With Perrin leading 50-4 at the half, it took a while for the Pirates to get rolling, Sims getting the first points of the half with 4:07 left in the third. Noah Morris added a three-pointer later with Sims’ free throws accounting for the third quarter offense. Perrin shot 3-12 in the third quarter but used good rebounding from both Joe and Travis Welch along with Landon Ruiz to keep the Greyhounds grounded. Leading by 47 heading into the fourth, Perrin pitched a shutout defensively in the final eight minutes. Ruiz and Morris set the pace offensively in the quarter, Ruiz scoring all five of his points late. Perrin opened the game on a 14-0 run, allowed a basket and then closed the frame with the final 10 points. The Pirates made their first seven shots and closed the quarter 1020. Throckmorton was just 1-11 shooting in the first. Evan Thompson had all 10 of his points in the second quarter, the Pirates outscoring the ‘Hounds 26-2. Sims and Case Lambert paced Perrin with 12 points each. Jack McCormick had 11.
