It is believed that the Perry Hall Father/Son and Mother/Daughter Golf Tournament is arguably the longest-running community golf tournament in Baltimore County.

The first tournament was held in the summer of 1985. Since then, there have been 38 completed outings with two having been postponed due to weather. However, aside from not only being the longest-running golf tournament, it is a story of family and strong community.

The first year there were 36 players; since that time it has grown to consistently 120 to 140 players each year. The tournament started as a father and son event and at year five, expanded to a mother and daughter tournament; now, family and friends of the Perry Hall community join the event.

Originally, most people were connected with the Perry Hall schools and recreation council. After the first year, the tournaments were held for charities and community causes.

The Cancer Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis, Kelly Szczybor (Hacke) and Andrew Hacke and the Angel Park Foundation, which started in remembrance of Ryan Szczybor, Kelly and Andy’s son.

There were other causes as well. One of the biggest contributors and supporters of the event has been Bill Paulshock, a successful local businessman in Perry Hall.

After about 20 years, to keep the focus on the community and families of Perry Hall and to keep the tournament affordable, it became a community get=together that occurs the first Friday in June every year.

One of the original participants and in many ways the foundation of the tournament was Bill Hacke. Bill and his family were not only a large part of the tournament, but of the Perry Hall Community as a whole. After Bill‘s passing in 2019, a community award was created in his name.

Each year the award is granted to a person in the group that best reflects Bill’s community spirit and giving. The first two participants selected were Tom Middlecamp and Kelly Szczybor. On the day of this year‘s tournament Paul Amirault was selected as a third recipient.

Another family story is a connection with Joe and Sue Moran and their family from West Virginia. These extended family members have been involved in the tournament since the first year and actually Mike Lewis of Parkersburg, West Virginia, encouraged the first tournament.

This year, approximately 20 players traveled from West Virginia to participate in the tournament.

The group that organizes this tournament each year is Julia Newton, Michaela Moran, Glenn Newton, Kurt Heyt, Marty Nelson, Dan Moran and Joseph Moran (Sr. and Jr.).

This year Baltimore County Councilman David Marks and State Senator Kathy Klausmeier presented community recognition awards to the Perry Hall community members who have participated in this event.

Also present and presented the award from Klausmeier was Robert “Bob” Romadka. Bob is quietly one of the greatest community contributors not only in Perry Hall, but throughout the east side of Baltimore County.

Bob was instrumental in helping start and complete such projects as CCBC (originally Essex Community College), Franklin Square Hospital and the nursing program, which was a partnership with CCBC. Bob has worked on many projects behind the scenes, to numerous mentions.

Ironically, one other project Bob worked on was Rocky Point Golf Course. Bob helped to select the site for the Rocky Point Golf Course and was there to see it through construction in 1971.

Others who contributed to the event that day include some words of recognition of the group’s achievement, from the Chief Executive of the Baltimore County Revenue Authority, Kenneth Mills.

And the efforts of the Golf Professional Bob Mokros and his assistant Nick Olszewski, who consistently put on a well-run event.
