Happening this week in and around Cecil County:

Before he cut the ribbon to officially open Suya Republic in Perryville, Abayomi Ademulegun handed those who attended cups of his signature grilled beef to try.

Sandy Turner, director of Cecil County Tourism, was among those who sampled the tender beef rubbed with spices and herbs.

“That was amazing!” Turner told Ademulegun. Others agreed, including Perryville Mayor Michelle Linkey, Commissioner Bob Taylor and Dianna Battaglia, the town’s director of planning.

Suya Republic is his second restaurant. The other is in Randallstown, Md. However, it was while managing his other businesses that Ademulegan discovered the building at 648 Broad St. in Perryville.

“I have assisted living facilities here and I come in Monday through Friday,” he said.

Suya Republic also serves burgers and other fare all with a taste of his native Nigeria in mind.

“It’s not spicy,” Ademulegun said, but added those that want to increase the heat are welcome to do so.

Suya Republic is open Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Happy Hour is from 3 until 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Physicians at Union Hospital in Elkton — part of ChristianaCare — have voted to unionize according to the National Labor Relations Board.

ChristianaCare Hospital in Newark and the ChristianaCare Emergency Room in Middletown, Del. were also part of the vote to join the Service Employees International Union, Maryland 10. While nearly 500 were eligible to cast ballots, 418 elected to participate and, of those, 288 voted in favor of joining SEIU. Only physicians that work full or part time, or per diem for the medical system are eligible to join.

In a prepared statement, ChristianaCare responded to the vote to unionize; the first of such in their company.

“ChristianaCare respects the right of our physicians to determine whether or not they want to be represented by a union,” the statement reads. “We are proud of the outstanding care provided by ChristianaCare physicians to our patients and community. As always, our focus remains on our mission of serving our neighbors.”

Innovative Auto Auction on Zeitler Lane in Elkton sustained more than $125,000 in damages and the loss of 27 vehicles from a Sunday night fire, according to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

Although the fire began around 9 p.m. according to video surveillance, a passerby saw the flames around 10:39 p.m. and called 911.

Singerly Volunteer Fire Company brought 25 firefighters to the scene and got the fire out in a half hour. Investigators, using that surveillance footage, determined the fire began in the engine compartment of a 2020 Kia Rio. However it quickly spread to 26 other vehicles. OMSFM suspects the storm that blew through Cecil County Sunday evening may also be a factor.

IAA specializes in online auctions of used vehicles. A year ago more than 40 vehicles were destroyed in a similar fire.

Grocery Outlet of Elkton in the Village at Elkton Shopping Center, 801 East Pulaski Highway, is trying to double its fundraising success in the Independence From Hunger campaign running through the month.

Last year, Scott Hines, independent operator of the Elkton store, raised over $6,000 to benefit Cecil County HELP Center and Meeting Ground. This year, with help from customers and the public, he hopes to raise more than $12,000.

The Independence From Hunger campaign focuses on food insecurity. It’s a campaign in which all the 470 Grocery Outlet stores nationwide are participating, with funds raised staying in their home communities.

Hines said customers have several ways to donate including making a $5 donation at checkout. That gives the shopper a $25 off coupon for a future visit. Shoppers can also purchase a pre-packaged bag of groceries, or make a cash donation in person or online at groceryoutlet.com/donate .

The Teal Antler is up for sale according to its owner, Brittany Van Spies, who posted that information on the Teal Antler Tribe Facebook page last week.

Van Spies said it’s more of an exploration than an actual sale in the hope that someone would like to take over the business with stores in Rising Sun and Forest Hill, Md.

“You should know that just because the business is listed, it doesn’t mean too much, just yet,” the post reads. “You never know who’s looking for an opportunity, so we are putting one out there!”

The Teal Antler first opened on West Main Street in Elkton in Nov. 2018 then by the following year moved to Bridge Street. That shop closed a year ago. Van Spies took over the location of Be Free Boutique on East Main St. in Rising Sun early in 2023.

The cafe first opened in the fall of 2021 and has changed hands at least once since.

BizBuySell hints that whoever buys the business will have no competition in the immediate area, but with the benefit of Chesapeake City Elementary and Bohemia Manor Middle and High School nearby to provide a customer base.
