PERTH AMBOY – The Runyon Water Treatment Plant is set to undergo $1.1 million in upgrades that address emerging contaminants and ensure continued access to clean drinking water for city residents.

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., helped secure the project funding.

The water treatment plant, which processes up to 8 million gallons of water per day, serves as a vital source of clean drinking water for Perth Amboy, which, like many communities, is facing challenges from contaminants.

"The funding I’ve secured is crucial to safeguarding public health and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Perth Amboy’s drinking water supply,” Pallone said in a statement. "By investing in these upgrades, we're not only protecting our community's water quality but also laying the foundation for a safer, healthier environment for generations to come."

The interim treatment project will focus on enhancing the plant’s ability to effectively treat water from emerging contaminants, work that includes exploring partial treatment options and targeting specific treatment processes to address concerns identified by environmental experts and regulators.

Mayor Helmin J. Caba thanked Pallone for the crucial funding that will help Perth Amboy build a new water treatment facility. The project is part of a comprehensive overhaul of Perth Amboy’s water treatment infrastructure, as outlined in the State of New Jersey’s Clean Water Intended Use Plan (IUP).

The funding for the project was requested by Pallone in the Fiscal Year 2025 annual spending bill in which members of the U.S. House may request federal funds for projects addressing the biggest needs in their communities.
