Lucca finds its ‘sweet spot’
Lucca just turned 20 years old. It has nurtured some of the city’s very best chefs and restaurateurs. Owner Steve Logsdon brought David Baruthio (Baru66 and four other places) here from France when he opened. Derek Eidson (Django and Guesthouse Supper Club) followed him. Logsdon is a James Beard Best Chef Midwest semifinalist himself. His brother, Joe, who makes Lucca’s bread, is a James Beard National Best Pastry Chef semifinalist. Des Moines’ first and only elevator death
I recently participated in an architecture walking tour of downtown Des Moines. I went with my mother and a handful of her friends for the southern tour of downtown that goes from the Civic Center to the World Food Prize and then makes its way around Court Avenue until it ends at the Kirkwood. My mother, a gem who I love dearly, mentioned at one point that the concrete corner of one of the buildings smelled like urine. She said this in her “outside voice” and quickly moved closer to the air flow.

CHIPPEWA FALLS — A man convicted of raping a woman and leaving her tied to a tree in rural Chippewa Falls in 1983, then later escaped from a halfway house in Madison in 1995, has been apprehended in Iowa, 29 years after he was last seen by authorities. St. Ambrose University to become owner of Mount Mercy University
Officials say St. Ambrose University in Davenport will become the non-profit owner of the Mount Mercy University campus in Cedar Rapids within the next two years. The presidents of the two Catholic universities held a news conference this morning to discuss the merger and sign the agreement. Federal officials and the commission that reviews U-S college and university academic standards have to review the merger plan and approve it.

(UPDATE 8/1/24): 18 hogs die in Guthrie County semi tractor-trailer accident
(Adair, Iowa) – The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office today (Thursday), released additional information with regard to an accident that took place early Wednesday morning, north of Adair, and that resulted in the death of 18 hogs. The report says a 2011 Peterbilt semi registered to Hartstack Trucking, Inc., from Clarinda, and driven by 31-year-old Christopher Ryan Boggan, of York NW Salem, PA, was pulling a livestock trailer loaded with 167 hogs, and was traveling south on Frontier Road at around 3:30-a.m., when the semi went by “left curve ahead” and “Stop sign ahead” signs. The rig rolled over rumble strips near the intersection and by directional signs.
Head to Grand Junction for 50107 Summerfest Tomorrow and Saturday
Grand Junction will be hopping with family-fun entertainment this weekend. The annual 50107 Summerfest kicks off tomorrow evening with a slate of festivities. Co-Organizer Linda Hoffman says the carnival, food vendors, and yard games all open at 5pm, along with Greene County Cattlemen’s Association will also serve a meal from 5-8pm.
