Alum part of Santa Cruz team that won Pulitzer Prize for breaking news
Photojournalist’s images and video part of award-winning coverage of destructive Santa Cruz storms. On May 6, Kevin Painchaud (B.A., ’97) received a cryptic message from his boss, the managing editor of Lookout Santa Cruz, a digital-only news organization covering Santa Cruz County. She told him and the rest of the 10-person newsroom to assemble for a company meeting at 10 a.m. “Don’t worry — it’s good news,” she told him. No one had any clue what she was about to say.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District announced last week that Stege Elementary School Campus will temporarily close for a rebuild of the campus. The announcement came from Superintendent Kenneth C Hurst Sr via a letter announcing the closure to start the 2024-25 school year. He said WCCUSD has chosen the DeJean Middle School campus as the temporary location to accommodate two separate school communities with minimal impact on student learning and daily operations.

Family with a baseball pedigree prepares young athletes with major-league ambitions
Amateur baseball scouting has changed drastically since JJ Guinn, a Berkeley police officer and part-time Oakland A’s scout, spotted Claudell Washington on the local diamonds. Washington didn’t even play for the Berkeley High School team, yet the A’s signed the outfielder to a modest contract. As part of their decision this year to close the 40-year-old on-campus trailer park that housed 41 students, UC Santa Cruz officials cited a safety and sustainability assessment report that found that the trailers had fire hazards, mold concerns, weak security systems and long-term habitability issues. The June 25 report,...
Santa Cruz Ballet Theater closing after nearly 50 years
After nearly a half century of training generations in the rarefied art of ballet, the Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre is no more. On Monday, SCBT’s long-time artistic director, Diane Cypher, announced that the local training academy is closing its doors at the end of July. For Santa Cruz County audiences, SCBT was known largely for its full performances of “The Nutcracker” each holiday season at the Santa Cruz Civic. But for young dancers interested in rigorous ballet training, it was a top-flight academy that, in many cases, led to careers in professional ballet.
Tom Stafford retires from Pacifica School District
All educators and staff should be celebrated for the work they do to prepare our children for the future, but today I want to celebrate one in particular upon his retirement. Tom Stafford came to the Pacifica School District in August, 2002, teaching chorus to every 3rd, 4th and 5th-grader in Pacifica - well over 1,000 students every week. Over the past 22 years he has taken on many roles in the district, working in special education, serving as principal of Linda Mar and Cabrillo Schools, band director, coordinator of visual and performing arts, administrator of special projects, and teaching in 3rd grade and 5th grade classrooms.
