    Peshtigo, Oconto Niagara and Gillett advance to boys' Regional semifinals

    Tuesday marked the beginning of the WIAA boys basketball playoffs, and ten area teams took the court for Regional quarterfinal action.

    Who advanced to tonight’s semifinals and who had their season come to an end? Read ahead to find out.

    Division 3

    No. 7 Peshtigo 55-No. 10 Oconto Falls 49PESHTIGO — The Peshtigo boys basketball team slipped past Oconto Falls and into the Regional semifinals with a 55-49 triumph over Oconto Falls.

    After securing a 24-22 cushion at halftime the Bulldogs (13-12) outscored the Panthers (6-19) by a narrow 31-to-27 margin in the second half to secure the win.

    Peshtigo was aided by a strong outing from the foul line, where the Bulldogs converted 16 of their 23 free throws.

    Dominik Baxter led the Bulldogs with a game-high 21 points. Silas Williams and Carter Roeder both pitched in eight while Will McMahon added six.

    JJ Pytelski was the Panthers leading scorer with 13 points.

    No. 6 Oconto 87-No. 11 Coleman 64OCONTO — Oconto muscled its way into the Division 4 Regional semifinals with an 87-64 victory over Coleman.

    The Blue Devils (16-9) seized a three-point advantage at halftime before blowing matters wide open with a huge second half, as Oconto outscored Coleman 49-29.

    Logan Kurth poured in 30 points for the Cougars. Tyler Rennie added 11, Victor Kostreva was close behind with 10, and Brady Dufeck tallied nine.

    Carter Koch dropped a game-high 31 points for the Blue Devils. Trenton Hartman backed him up with a 24-point outing of his own, while Cooper Campshure finished with 14.

    Coleman finishes the season at 9-16 overall.

    Up nextOconto: The Blue Devils are at No. 3 Kewaunee (17-7) tonight. The Storm swept Oconto 2-0 in the regular season. Tip off is at 7 p.m.

    No. 9 Goodman/Pembine 63- No. 8 STAA 56MARINETTE — Goodman/Pembine spoiled Caleb Duvall’s career night as the Patriots zipped past the Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy boys basketball team 63-56.

    Duvall poured in a career-high 24 points but the Cavaliers were unable to erase their five-point halftime deficit despite a 35-point second half.

    Teagan Anderson collected 12 points for the Cavies. Jake Farley added six while Kaiden Bailey tallied five.

    Goodman/Pembine did not report any stats at press time.

    STAA finishes the season at 9-14 overall.

    No. 6 Oneida Nation 58- No. 11 Wausaukee 45ONEIDA, Wis. — Seth Kraemer’s team-high 20 points wasn’t enough to fuel the Wausaukee boys basketball team to victory, as Oneida Nation took down the Rangers 58-45.

    Wausaukee (10-15) stayed within one throughout the first half but the Thunderhawks (16-9) pulled away with a 33-point outburst in the second half to cruise to the win.

    Ethan Danforth led all scorers with a game-high 23 points. Marqus Thayer chipped in 11 points for Oneida Nation, while Vernon Stevens and Evander Danforth-Alavez both contributed seven.

    Anthony Vanick and Connor Schroeder both had eight points for the Rangers.

    No. 4 Niagara 59-No. 13 Lena 39NIAGARA — Lena sported a balanced scoring attack but it was the Niagara boys basketball team that got the last laugh, as the Badgers vanquished the Wildcats 59-39.

    Eight different Wildcats scored for Lena, including a team-high 17 from Mason Spice, but a 23-point explosion from Blake Holmes coupled with a combined 33 points by Tommy Martin (19) and Cameron Schiefelbein (14) propelled Niagara to victory.

    Logan Graef, Zander Thomson and Anthony Seefeldt all notched four points for Lena.

    Lena wraps up the 2023-24 at 5-20 overall.

    Up nextNiagara: The Badgers (17-8) host No. 5 Florence (15-9) on tonight at 7 p.m. The two teams split the regular season series, with Niagara winning the last matchup 62-60 on Jan. 30.

    No. 3 Gillett 79-No. 14 Sevastopol 49GILLETT — Aydin Franti and Jesse DeBauch paired together to nearly outscore Sevastopol by themselves as the Gillett boys basketball team sunk Sevastopol 79-49.

    Franti led all scorers with 23 points while DeBauch dropped 21 more, giving the duo nearly as many points combined (44) as the Pioneers mustered as a team.

    Logan Schuh was the lone Sevastopol player to reach double-digit scoring figures with 12 points. Damien Lardinois added nine.

    Ben Matczak collected 14 points for the Tigers.
