PESHTIGO — Peshtigo and Iron Mountain played through intermittent snow flurries, but the Mountaineers could do nothing to cool off the Bulldog girls soccer team.

Peshtigo put six goals on the board in the first half before closing out an 8-0 victory.

Peshtigo coach Jessica Carriveau spoke about her team’s ability to manage the inhospitable elements.

“They overcame by gutting it out and being tough,” Carriveau said. “There are a lot of frozen toes and frozen fingers right now, but they just put their heads down and played hard.”

Jillian Behnke got the scoring started off an assist from Audra Bauman.

Bauman, a junior midfielder, then ripped off four consecutive goals to give the Bulldogs a healthy 5-0 advantage.

Lorelei Maxwell scored with an assist from Behnke to finish off the first-half action.

“The girls controlled the ball and put up a lot of shots in the first half,” Carriveau said. “Audra put four in the goal. The girls passed well and controlled the ball. I’m not sure that (goalie) Lucy (Lemire) faced a shot, so it was really fun.”

The wide margin gave Coach Carriveau the flexibility to move some players around, including inserting freshman forward Nico Fox in between the pipes and moving senior goalie Lucy Lemire into the field.

Behnke scored 13 minutes into the second half. Then, with 13:50 showing on the clock, Maxwell played a cross from right to left, and Lemire snuck a header just inside the left post to end the game in an 8-0 mercy-rule victory.

“The second half we changed things around a little bit,” Carriveau said. “A lot of girls played different positions. Nico Fox got her first time in goal and had a couple of saves, and Lucy got her first goal off of a beautiful header at the end.”

Lemire and Fox combined on the team’s second shutout of the season.

Bauman finished with four goals and an assist, while Behnke netted two goals and assisted two more. Maxwell had a goal and two assists, while Lemire had one goal, and Lauren Ahrndt recorded an assist.
