MENOMINEE — Peshtigo slugged its way to its fifth straight victory on Thursday, as the Lady Bulldogs blasted the Menominee softball team 15-4 in five innings.

Peshtigo (4-2 Packerland Conference, 5-2 overall) bashed out 15 hits as a team compared to eight base knocks for the Maroons.

Peshtigo opened Thursday’s game with a three-run outburst in the top of the first inning and never looked back, seizing a 9-0 cushion in the top of the second before the Maroons were able to scratch a pair of runs across in their half of the inning.

“Our girls played well. They were aggressive at the plate and looking to hit with runners in scoring position,” Peshtigo coach Matt Lacoursiere said. “Our pitchers came out and threw strikes, and that’s all we can ask for.”

Back-to-back RBI-doubles from Sam Lacoursiere and Cameron Finger nudged the Lady Bulldogs out to an 11-2 advantage in the third inning before Menominee’s Addy Johnson blasted an RBI two-bagger of her own to deep center field.

Sam Lacoursiere drove in two more runs as Peshtigo’s lead swelled to 12 in the top of the fourth, but Menominee continued to chip away courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of Kadyn Olsen, as the Maroons trimmed the Lady Bulldogs’ lead down to 15-4.

Mady Barker tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth to put the bats back in the hands of the Maroons, but with Menominee needing to plate at least one run to stave off the 10-run, five-inning mercy rule, Peshtigo relief pitcher Elaina Weddel bore down and struck out Kam Olson for the first out.

Ava Johnson rolled into a 4-3 putout for out No. 2, which brought Jada Schuette to the plate as Menominee’s last hope at a rally, but Weddel dashed those hopes quickly with a three-pitch strikeout to secure the win for Peshtigo.

“Their pitchers located her pitches very well on our stronger hitters,” Menominee skipper Dale Olsen said. “Offensively, they were able to get a few shots down the line and that really hurt us early. We didn’t give up, we just ran out of innings.”

Nevaeh Russell got the start in the circle for Peshtigo and picked up the win after tossing three innings of seven-hit ball. She gave up three runs, all earned, and recorded four punchouts without issuing a single walk.

Olson was saddled with the loss after allowing 11 hits, 11 runs (all earned) and four walks in three innings of work.

Addy Johnson and Barker both had two-hit games for Menominee’s offense. Olsen, Phoebe Barrette, Elena Murphy and Savannah Houle all had base hits, with Houle also reaching base on a hit-by-pitch to go with a stolen base.

Sam Lacoursiere went a perfect 4-of-4 at the dish with four RBIs and one double. Weddel and Finger both enjoyed three-RBI afternoons, while Russell, Wortner and Rylie Ellie all had multi-hit games for the Lady Bulldogs.

Oconto 12, Menominee 7MENOMINEE — Menominee’s struggles against teams from the Packerland Conference continued on Friday, as the Maroons dropped a 12-7 decision to Oconto.

Oconto (2-2 Packerland, 5-5 overall) overcame a three-run deficit to tie matters up at 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning before a four-run explosion in the top of the sixth lifted the Lady Blue Devils out to an 8-5 edge.

Menominee drove in a pair of runs in its half of the sixth to pull within one but Oconto responded with another four-run outburst before Jaelin Kumhala pitched a scoreless seventh inning to hand Menominee the loss.

Kumhala hurled a complete game and permitted 12 hits and seven earned runs to go with four walks and a trio of punchouts.

Barker also spun a complete game and was tagged for 14 hits and 12 runs (10 earned) alongside five free passes. She fanned seven Lady Blue Devil batters.

Oconto out-hit Menominee by a narrow 14-12 margin.

Addy Johnson went 3-4 with two RBIs. Ella Barker was also 3-4 with an RBI, while Schutte batted in a pair of runs on a 1-4 day at the plate.

Maddie Coshenet collected five RBIs, hit a home run and scored two runs for Oconto. She and Braiya Wusterbarth both had three-hit games.
