MUG announces ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ contest

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Do you think your dog has an ugly mug? MUG Root Beer wants to see it.

The popular root beer brand is holding a World’s Ugliest Dog Contest to win cash and prizes.

MUG and their mascot, Dog, announced Monday an annual contest kicked off to find the World’s Ugliest Dog.

MUG explains the contest will take place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, where top money will be awarded to the top three contestants along with a chance for the winner to be featured on limited edition cans of MUG Root Beer in place of the usual mascot.

The third-place winner would win $2,000, second-place $3,000, and first-place would win the grand prize of $5,000.

These prizes aren’t just for pooches, as the winning dog owner would win free MUG for a year and a chance for their pooch to be featured on MUG social channels.

The contest goes back 50 years and in 2024, MUG and Dog are showing every dog has its day, as the contest celebrates dogs who were rescued from shelters and puppy mills, highlighting the importance of adoption.

“MUG will always root for the dogs. In fact, we love ours so much, we put him on every package. That’s why we want to give the World’s Ugliest Dog their own chance to be commemorated as top dog,” said Patrick Gamble, Sr. Brand Marketing Manager, MUG Root Beer.

“I root for all my dogz becuz all dogz r winnerz. MUG needz mor dogz!” said MUG Root Beer mascot Dog.

MUG says contestants will be crowned on Friday, June 21 and winners will be announced on Monday, June 24.
