Northern Illinois experienced an unexpected jolt early Monday morning as a 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck the region. At precisely 2:53 a.m. local time, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter near Somonauk, a village approximately 64 miles west of Chicago. The early-morning tremor caught residents off guard, awakening many from their sleep.

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck Northern Illinois early this morning. The earthquake occurred a little before 3 a.m. in Southern DeKalb County, near the town of Somonauk. The earthquake was felt in various locations including Winthrop Harbor, Cary, and Yorkville. Heather and Cory were awakened by the quake, initially mistaking it for a storm. Marcia in Winthrop Harbor reported feeling her house shake. A resident in Cary noticed the loud and rumbly noise, distinguishing it from thunder. Dan in Yorkville also felt the earthquake.
