    Wednesday: Historic Hopewell Foundation Lunch and Learn

    The Historic Hopewell Foundation, a non-profit historical organization in the city that aims to support Hopewell's historic properties, regularly hosts free history lectures every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 146, located at 217 East City Point Road. The last lecture will take place on Wednesday, August 28.

    This Wednesday's lecture will be delivered by author, historian and former journalist William Geroux, who will discuss the history behind his book: "The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler’s U-Boats." Read more about the book here. Bring your own lunch or order one at the American Legion. Desserts and drinks will be provided.

    Thursday: Public meeting in Petersburg seeks input on improving Tri-Cities transportation system

    Want to share your thoughts on improving the existing transportation system in Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights? The Crater Planning District Commission wants your feedback for its Tri-Cities Regional Multimodal Mobility Plan. The plan aims to create a more accessible, connected urban landscape for pedestrians, public transit users and cyclists throughout the Tri-City area.

    There will be a series of public meetings in Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights in July, where residents can learn more about the ongoing project, ask questions and provide input on regional transportation needs. Additional meetings will also be held in the future.

    In Petersburg, the meeting will be held this Thursday, July 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Petersburg Public Library located at 201 W Washington Street.

    The next meeting will be in Colonial Heights on Thursday, July 25. The meeting will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Public Library, located at 1000 Yacht Basin Drive.

    The last meeting of the month will take place on Tuesday, July 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hopewell Branch Library, located at 209 E Cawson St, Hopewell.

    Free recurring fitness classes in Colonial Heights

    The city of Colonial Heights has partnered with Sports Backers to bring residents free, recurring fitness classes on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Colonial Heights Community Center, located at 157 Roanoke Avenue.

    Mondays: Overflow with Ebo

    Overflow with Ebo, 6-7 p.m. Meant for ages 13 and older, this class is a beginner friendly mix of cardio, Pilates and Yoga. "We move to the beat all while improving muscle strength, balance and flexibility." Register here by Sunday at midnight to attend. Located in the Community Room.

    Thursdays:

    Juju's Fit Fix, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Meant for ages 13 and older, this class is a 60 minute "light and fun" cardio class "to get the heart rate going and the body moving to some great music." Register here by Wednesday night to attend. Located in the Multipurpose Room.

    The Petersburg Public Library has recurring health and wellness classes for community members! Why not drop by to check some of them out? Read more about some of the offerings below:

    Tuesdays and Thursdays: Free Yoga Series at the Petersburg Library

    Did you know that the Petersburg Public Library offers free yoga classes? The classes, led by instructor Belinda Washington-Todd, are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Wellness Activity Center on the second floor of the library. All are welcome.     Wednesday: Free Fitness Classes at the Petersburg Library

    Looking for something to do with your Wednesday evenings? Why not drop by the Petersburg Public Library and take a free fitness class? Toning With Toya takes place every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Wellness Activity Center on the second floor of the library. The class is open to all ages and fitness levels.     Keep Hopewell Beautiful Committee looking for new board member

    Do you want to help keep Hopewell beautiful? The Keep Hopewell Beautiful (KHB) Committee— a city forum to influence residents of Hopewell to keep the city clean and aesthetically appealing— is looking for a new board member to help plan cleanup, beautification and education events around the city.

    Hopewell seeks residents' feedback on road safety

    Hopewell is working on a safety action plan to help reduce injuries and fatalities on the city's roadway, and they want residents' input to prioritize roadway and infrastructure improvements and address road safety concerns in the city. Interested in sharing your thoughts? You can take the brief survey, which is open for the foreseeable future, here.

    Would you like to learn more about the city's plans to make Hopewell's roads safer? Check out their website or stop by the Hopewell Safe Streets pop-up booth at the Hopewell Farmer’s Market, located at 209 E Cawson Street, between 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 18.

    Hopewell Cooling Shelters open through August 31

    No AC? Looking for somewhere to stay cool in the summer heat? Look no further than Hopewell's Cooling Shelters, which opened in late June based on heat advisory warnings from the National Weather Service and will stay open through August. Water will be provided at the shelter during operating hours.

    The Cooling Shelters' operating hours are as follows:

    Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Hopewell Community Center located at 100 W City Point Road.

    Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Former Warming Shelter, located at 102 N 10th Avenue.

    Petersburg Comfort Station open for the summer

    In addition to Hopewell's Cooling Shelter, Petersburg's Comfort Station also opened for the summer in late June.

    The Comfort Station, which will provide cool water for those seeking a relief from the heat, is located within Petersburg's Transit Station on 100 West Washington Street. It is available to the city's residents from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

    City residents are encouraged to use the bus service to reach the Transit Center, where they can rest, cool off, drink cold water and eventually return home by bus. Access to the Transit Center is available through the doors on Washington Street and the Operations side where buses board. (The Union Street entrance remains closed.) Food and pets, except for service animals, are not permitted inside the facility.

    Visual Preference Survey: The City of Petersburg wants your feedback

    Calling all Petersburg residents! Your city wants your feedback.

    The City of Petersburg is updating its Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances, which are the regulations addressing how property can be used and divided in Petersburg. This survey will assist City staff, the Planning Commission, and City Council in understanding resident visual preferences and perspectives on the land use development in Petersburg.

    You can take the survey here. All surveys must be completed online or returned to the Planning and Community Development Office in City Hall by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9.

    Paper surveys are also available and can be found at the Planning and Community Development Office located at 135 N. Union Street, Suite 304.
