    Week of free family programming at the Petersburg library

    Get ready for a full week of free family fun and youth programming at the Petersburg Public Library this Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday! There will be events, games and activities for children and teens/tweens of all ages.

    Check out the following schedule to see what this week's library programming has to offer:

    • 7/22 "The Magical Adventure of the Enchanted Forest" Children's programming for ages 7-12. Starts at 1 p.m.
    • 7/24 "Forest Friends" – Children's programming for ages 0-6. 12:30-1:30 p.m.
    • 7/25 "Escapade Portrayals" Tween/Teen programming for ages 13-18. 1-2 p.m.
    • 7/27 Game Night– Enjoy hours of fun with board games in the Library's Imagination Station from noon to 3 p.m.

    Tuesday: Movie screening at the Petersburg library

    The next free summer movie screening at the Petersburg Public Library is coming up this Tuesday, July 23.

    The library will be showing the 2007 fantasy romantic comedy film Enchanted (PG). The screening will begin at 1 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. You do not need a library card to attend.

    Wednesday: Petersburg job fairs

    Petersburg is hiring! The city will be hosting several job fairs this summer for a wide array of positions within the city. There are two scheduled for this Wednesday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    The Petersburg Area Transit Department job fair will be in the lobby of the Petersburg Area Transit building located at 100 W Washington St.

    The Dogwood Trace Golf Course Department job fair will be at the golf course, located at 3108 Homestead Drive.

    Apply online ahead of time to secure an on-the-spot interview.

    Wednesday: Teddy Bear Picnic at the Colonial Heights Public Library

    The Colonial Heights Public Library, located at 1000 Yacht Basin Drive, is hosting its Teddy Bear Picnic and storytime for children this Wednesday, July 24.

    In addition to the storytime, crafts and games will be available for everyone to enjoy. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and take place on the library's front lawn. Bring your favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal, a picnic blanket and a packed lunch.

    Wednesday: Historic Hopewell Foundation Lunch and Learn

    The Historic Hopewell Foundation, a non-profit historical organization in the city that aims to support Hopewell's historic properties, regularly hosts free history lectures every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 146, located at 217 East City Point Road. The last lecture will take place on Wednesday, August 28.

    This Wednesday's lecture, titled "That Gibson Guy," will be delivered by Barclay DuPriest. Bring your own lunch or order one at the American Legion. Desserts and drinks will be provided.

    Thursday: Public meeting in Colonial Heights seeks input on improving Tri-Cities transportation system

    Want to share your thoughts on improving the existing transportation system in Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights? The Crater Planning District Commission wants your feedback for its Tri-Cities Regional Multimodal Mobility Plan. The plan aims to create a more accessible, connected urban landscape for pedestrians, public transit users and cyclists throughout the Tri-City area.

    A series of July public meetings are being held in the Tri-City area for residents to learn more about the ongoing project, ask questions and provide input on regional transportation needs. The next meeting will be in Colonial Heights on Thursday, July 25. The meeting will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Public Library, located at 1000 Yacht Basin Drive.

    The last meeting of the month will take place on Tuesday, July 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hopewell Branch Library, located at 209 E Cawson St, Hopewell.

    Petersburg's meeting was held last Thursday. Additional meetings will also be held in the future.

    Recurring Tri-City programming and more

    Free blood pressure screenings Tuesdays at the Petersburg Public Library

    The American Heart Association and the Petersburg Public Library are collaborating with Central Virginia Health Services to bring Petersburg's residents free blood pressure screenings.

    A community health worker with Central Virginia Health Services will be at the Petersburg library every Tuesday from 1 to 6 p.m. offering completely free blood pressure screenings. No library card or proof of residence is required to get your free screening. There is no limit to how many screenings you can get.

    There is also a new loan program in place that allows any library member to "check out" blood pressure monitors for free just like you would a regular book. Interested? Learn more about why you should stop by for a free blood pressure screening here .

    Free fitness classes in Colonial Heights

    The city of Colonial Heights has partnered with Sports Backers to bring residents free, recurring fitness classes on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Colonial Heights Community Center, located at 157 Roanoke Avenue.

    Mondays: Overflow with Ebo

    Overflow with Ebo, 6-7 p.m. Meant for ages 13 and older, this class is a beginner friendly mix of cardio, Pilates and Yoga. "We move to the beat all while improving muscle strength, balance and flexibility." Register here by Sunday at midnight to attend. Located in the Community Room.

    Thursdays:

    Juju's Fit Fix, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Meant for ages 13 and older, this class is a 60 minute "light and fun" cardio class "to get the heart rate going and the body moving to some great music." Register here by Wednesday night to attend. Located in the Multipurpose Room.

    Free health and fitness classes at the Petersburg Public Library

    The Petersburg Public Library has recurring health and wellness classes for community members! Why not drop by to check some of them out? Read more about some of the offerings below:

    Tuesdays and Thursdays: Free Yoga Series at the Petersburg Library

    Did you know that the Petersburg Public Library offers free yoga classes ? The classes, led by instructor Belinda Washington-Todd, are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the Wellness Activity Center on the second floor of the library. All are welcome.     Wednesday: Free Fitness Classes at the Petersburg Library

    Looking for something to do with your Wednesday evenings? Why not drop by the Petersburg Public Library and take a free fitness class? Toning With Toya takes place every Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Wellness Activity Center on the second floor of the library. The class is open to all ages and fitness levels.     Hopewell Cooling Shelters open through August 31

    No AC? Looking for somewhere to stay cool in the summer heat? Look no further than Hopewell's Cooling Shelters, which opened in late June based on heat advisory warnings from the National Weather Service and will stay open through August. Water will be provided at the shelter during operating hours.

    The Cooling Shelters' operating hours are as follows:

    Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Hopewell Community Center located at 100 W City Point Road.

    Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Former Warming Shelter, located at 102 N 10th Avenue.

    Petersburg Comfort Station open for the summer

    In addition to Hopewell's Cooling Shelter, Petersburg's Comfort Station also opened for the summer in late June.

    The Comfort Station, which will provide cool water for those seeking a relief from the heat, is located within Petersburg's Transit Station on 100 West Washington Street. It is available to the city's residents from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

    City residents are encouraged to use the bus service to reach the Transit Center, where they can rest, cool off, drink cold water and eventually return home by bus. Access to the Transit Center is available through the doors on Washington Street and the Operations side where buses board. (The Union Street entrance remains closed.) Food and pets, except for service animals, are not permitted inside the facility.

    Visual Preference Survey: The City of Petersburg wants your feedback

    Calling all Petersburg residents! Your city wants your feedback.

    The City of Petersburg is updating its Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances, which are the regulations addressing how property can be used and divided in Petersburg. This survey will assist City staff, the Planning Commission, and City Council in understanding resident visual preferences and perspectives on the land use development in Petersburg.

    You can take the survey here . All surveys must be completed online or returned to the Planning and Community Development Office in City Hall by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9.

    Paper surveys are also available and can be found at the Planning and Community Development Office located at 135 N. Union Street, Suite 304.
