    28 players participate in Petoskey Open Chess Classic

    PETOSKEY — The second annual Petoskey Open Chess Classic brought in a group of 28 players from as near as Petoskey and as far as Kentucky.

    The four-round tournament was hosted in a Swiss style on June 22, with rating points and custom ceramic award cups on the line, according to a press release.

    In the Reserve Section, exclusive to players with U.S. Chess ratings below 1,200 points:

    • Elijah Hammond, 11, of Petoskey, came in first after winning all four games
    • Ayden Eccles of Reed City came in second
    • Mario Sales of Midland came in third

    Levi Hornibrook of Petoskey scored 2.5 points and won the "Top Under 700" prize.

    The Open Section, which had 10 adult participants and two youth participants:

    • Aaron Joseph from Midland came in first place
    • Daniel Praasterink, 18, of Traverse City came in second place
    • Adam Masek of Alanson came in third

    Jackson Borst, a former Petoskey library player who now lives near Traverse City, scored 2.5 points and won the "Top Under 1600" award.

    The next tournament to be hosted by the Petoskey District Library is the Petoskey Fall Chess Classic, which will be Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Carnegie Building.

    Monthly youth tournaments are held at the library.
