Resilience and evolution: Coveyou Scenic Farm Market celebrates 150 years of operation

PETOSKEY — After five generations of farmers and an ever-evolving business, Coveyou Scenic Farm Market is celebrating its 150th year of operation.

"It was absolutely humbling and exciting," David Coveyou told the Petoskey News-Review. "It's just hard to believe that my family has been farming on this piece of land for this 150 years. It's humbling, in a way, to think of them all coming before me and being the fifth generation now and to be running this farm operation."

Coveyou, who co-owns the market with his wife, Kathleen, said through each generation the farm and market has changed, offering different services to evolve with the needs of the community.

"There is something about the resilience of the agriculture community," Coveyou said. "For us to be viable and to still be meeting the needs of the community, we evolve with it."

To celebrate how much the market has evolved, the farm is marking its 150th year with a 58-foot-long exhibit, featuring a timeline highlighting local agriculture.

Coveyou said the market has always been more than just a business, it's a part of the community.

The timeline shows what farming was like in Northern Michigan and how it has changed, while celebrating the people who made their mark on the industry in the region.

The farm was also honored with a plaque from the Historical Society of Michigan. The plaque was unveiled Tuesday morning with the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce.

"It was absolutely great to see so many people showing up (Tuesday) morning to support the farm," Coveyou said.

Celebrations for the 150th anniversary will continue throughout the month, with people having the opportunity to stop by the farm and check out the new timeline, or the chance to stop in for a farm to table dinner on Saturday, July 27, with tickets available on the farm's website at coveyouscenicfarm.com .
