PETOSKEY — The Petoskey Wine Region hosted its first competition in May, celebrating local wines and wineries.

A total of 66 medals were given out at the event on May 17, including 20 gold, 32 silver, five bronze, seven Best of Class awards and two overall awards, according to a press release.

Boyne Valley Vineyards came out on top, earning the Best of Class Sweet Red award for Foxhole Red, which also clinched Best Wine of the Competition.

The Cellars of Royal Farms was equally recognized, garnering the Petoskey Wine Region Winery of the Year award.

The Rudbeckia Winery, Mackinaw Trail Winery and Maple Moon Sugarbush Winery all took home Best of Class titles as well.

Five judges took part in a completely blind tasting, only aware of the type of wine, but not who produced it, Dustin Stabile, Petoskey Wine Region president, told the News-Review.

“It was a really good group of judges,” Stabile said. “They were just absolutely fabulous, and they were blown away with some of the quality of the wines coming out of the Petoskey Wine Region.”

"I can emphatically say the wine quality was amazing,” added Jessica Youngblood, owner of Youngblood Vineyard and a judge of the competition, in the release.

The annual wine competition is a new addition to the region’s calendar to highlight local wines. Different competitions used to be held annually, but without a strong local focus, Stabile said.

The event is part of the Petoskey Wine Region’s commitment to fostering a spirit of excellence and community among its members and plans to continue hosting it annually.
