July 25, 1924: Thieves loot safe, get $40

Last night the safe in H. Portelance’s shop, corner of State and B street, east side, was robbed of $40 in currency, two tens and four five dollar bills.

The job was easily accomplished as Mr. Portelance forgot to lock the safe, the door of which was simply closed. The robbery was discovered about 6 o’clock this morning by Art Girard who found the rear door of the shop open, and seeing no person about the premises, notified Mr. Portelance.

The thief or thieves entered through a window in the rear where two lights of glass were broken out to admit the body of a man or boy. From all appearances two persons were engaged in the job and they used a horse shoe to break the window which was found on the ground near the window.

Mr. Portelance says that the shoe is of a pattern not used in his shop. Sheriff Slade took a survey of the premises and it is believed that evidence was obtained that will lead to the arrest of the guilty parties.
