    Voters approve ballot initiatives across Emmet County

    EMMET COUNTY — In the Aug. 6 election, voters across Emmet County had multiple ballot proposals to consider, including millages for library funding and school bond proposals.

    Voters approved an operating millage supporting Emmet County, with a total of 6,430 yes votes and 3,463 no votes, according to unofficial results from the Emmet County Clerk. The millage request allows the county to levy a total of 7.8 mills each year from 2025-2028. A total of 5.6 mills will go to Emmet County, the townships will receive 2 mills and the Char-Em ISD will receive 0.2 mills.

    The millage has been approved by voters at the same rate every four years since 2004.

    Voters also approved a millage for Emmet County EMS. Asking for 0.7 mills to support the EMS operating budget, voters approved the issue with 7,588 yes votes and 2,819 no votes. The approval will allow the EMS services to assess millages from December 2024 through December 2028.

    Resort and Bear Creek townships both voted on a millage renewal to help fund the Resort-Bear Creek Fire Department's operating budget. The ask was for a four-year renewal at 0.5 mills, and was approved with 1,352 yes votes and 563 no votes in Bear Creek, and 783 yes votes and 294 no votes in Resort, according to unofficial results.

    Voters in Resort Township were also asked for a four-year request for 0.25 mills, which would fund parks maintenance and recycling/composting collection. The proposal passed with 709 yes votes and 369 no votes.

    Voters in Carp Lake approved both millage renewal requests they had listed on the ballot, including a road maintenance millage and a fire department millage.

    The 1 mill road maintenance millage received 142 yes votes and 63 no votes. The 1 mill request for the fire department received 156 yes votes and 51 no votes.

    In both Little Traverse and Springvale townships, a 0.4 mill request to support the operations of the Petoskey District Library was approved. Little Traverse Township brought in 532 yes votes and 270 no votes, while Springvale Township saw 440 yes votes and 234 no votes.

    Springvale Township voters were also asked about a 1 mill road maintenance millage, which passed with 531 yes votes and 136 no votes. The ask was for a four-year renewal, which would allow the township to levy 1 mill from 2025-2028.

    Voters in Springvale Township approved a request for a 1 mill renewal from 2025-2028 to support the fire department's operation as well. The item received 538 yes votes and 131 no votes.

    West Traverse Township voters were asked to consider a four-year millage request to support the maintenance and operation of the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve. The item passed, receiving 600 yes votes and 165 no votes, according to unofficial results.

    Voters in Mackinaw City, part of which is in Emmet County, voted on whether or not to approve an $8,090,000 bond proposal, which would be used to furnish and equip additions to the schools, build and remodel classrooms, acquire and install technology, and more. The item, which voters in Cheboygan County also voted on, passed with 134 yes votes and 102 no votes, according to unofficial results from the Cheboygan County clerk. Emmet County voters approved the item with 130 yes votes and 105 no votes.
