The 2024 season has officially kicked off.

Well, for everyone but football. That’s next week.

But for everything from volleyball and soccer, to golf, tennis and cross country, the fall season is officially alive and well.

So, who is starting the season out with some solid performances? We’ve got you covered with the top performers for Emmet and Charlevoix county over the last week.

Each week, look for who is standing out and making the list in each sport. Some busy weeks, we might even need a couple lists.

Here’s who began the 2024 fall high school sports season off strong:

    GIRLS GOLF

Riley Barr, Petoskey: Petoskey got the season started with an overall win in the Lady Titan Invite at Interlochen Golf Course and Barr led the way with a 91. She also notched a 97 to lead the PHS group in the Lober Classic this week.

Sara Hasse, Petoskey: Hasse opened the season with a round of 95 in the Lady Titan Invite, with Petoskey recording a 394 for the overall team victory, besting Cadillac’s 399 and TC West’s 420.

    VOLLEYBALL

Annabelle Seelye, Boyne City Head Coach: The new Boyne City head coach and former Rambler standout opened the season with a sweep over Bellaire (25-12, 25-19, 25-18). Seelye said afterward, “These girls are here to compete and I am excited to be on this journey with them. They impressed me with their communication on the court and how quickly they can come back from a mistake. These girls are insanely hard working in the gym and are constantly getting better, I couldn’t ask for more as a coach.”

Josie Wilson, Boyne City: Wilson led the Ramblers in a three-set sweep over Bellaire with 11 kills, getting her season started off right.

Kerry-Ann Ming, Mackinaw City: Ming led the Comets with 13 points total in a Pickford tournament to begin the season. She totaled 10 kills, six blocks and four aces.

Addie Patton, Boyne City: Patton impressed in the Boyne opener, going 13 of 13 on serve receptions, then added six assists, 17 digs and two aces.

Rian Esper, Mackinaw City: Esper had a strong opener for the Comets despite a trio of losses and a split with Cedarville in a Pickford tournament. She finished with 25 assists, four aces and four kills.

Lily Payton, Boyne City: The Ramblers’ new setter, Payton recorded 15 assists as a freshman playing in her first high school and varsity action.

    BOYS SOCCER

Ryan Novak, Harbor Springs: The Harbor Springs boys got started with a 1-1 draw against Riverview, with Novak notching the first goal of the season for the Rams, a beautiful one at that.

Henry Juneau, Harbor Springs: It took just two games into the 2024 season for Juneau to pick up where he left off a year ago. He notched two goals in a 3-2 loss to Alpena this week.

Johnny Lipchik, Petoskey: The Northmen have already put a few games on the schedule, but Lipchik was first to get a goal on the board this season for the Northmen. He scored in the first half of a 1-1 draw against Midland High.

    CROSS COUNTRY

Reeve Oberman, Petoskey: Petoskey began its season with its annual Taco Two Mile Race and Oberman showed the work he’s put in. He earned a second place finish in 19:04.03.

Stefi Reskevics, Harbor Springs: Reskevics had a nice start to the 2024 season in the Ryan Shay Invite in Charlevoix. She placed second overall with a time of 13:13.5 in the two-mile race.

Parker Fettig, Petoskey: Fettig placed third overall in the Taco Two Mile for the Northmen, but not by much. He ran 19:04.05, just hundredths of a second off runner-up.

Cody Bradley, Petoskey St. Michael: Bradley kept a good run of St. Michael performances going in the season opener recently in Charlevoix, turning in a second place time of 10:32.2.

Ava Pawlick, Petoskey: Pawlick began the season with an impressive first place win in the Taco Two Mile, recording a time of 22:26.64.

Hunter Eaton, Charlevoix: Eaton got his season kicked off with a dominant shooting in the Ryan Shay Invite, hosted by Charlevoix, late last week. He ran a first place time of 10:19.6.

Juniper Rodham, Harbor Springs: Rodham placed fourth for Harbor in the Ryan Shay opener, running a time of 13:35.2.

Fiona Scott, Petoskey: Scott opened her final season as a PHS runner with a second place finish in 23:19.18.

Zahar Rush, Petoskey: Rush nearly crossed the line in identical times as his teammates Oberman and Fettig, placing fourth in the Taco Two Mile in 19:04.07.

Maya Rohrer, Charlevoix: The Rayders' top girls finisher in the opener, Rohrer finished the two-mile Ryan Shay Invite in 13:48.1, good for fifth.
